About Congo
|
|
The Republic of Congo can be found in Central Africa on the Equator and is also known as Congo-Brazzaville in some parts of the world. It is bordered by Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cabinda, an Angolan exclave, as well as having a short stretch of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean.
Due to its position in Sub-Saharan Africa, the climate remains warm all year round although two periods of intense rainfall can be noted between March and May and September and November.
Much of the land is covered by rainforest vegetation and savannah which supports hundreds of species of wildlife including cheetahs, antelope, elephants, giraffes and monkeys. One large area of mainly inhospitable swampland in the Sangha Region is also home to a population of around 125,000 Western Lowland Gorillas.
The oil industry provides a major source of income for the Republic of Congo and has done so since the 1980s. Around two-thirds of the country’s gross domestic product can be traced back to the oil industry in some way and the booming sector has attracted much foreign investment in recent times.
