If the sunny Mediterranean climate of the Algarve does appeal with its picturesque towns and historical sites then you’re already prepared for a fantastic trip.
However, if you fancy exploring a little bit, here a few of Portugal’s other gems – and there are many more than the seven we’ve picked out too!
1. Cascais
Wiki
Cascais is renowned as being the resort of choice for Portugal’s royal family several centuries ago and it through this that the former fishing village gained fame. Now a large yacht harbour is surrounded by glistening sandy beaches while castle ruins and a sea museum provide sights of cultural interest. Easy to reach from Lisbon and with plenty of fine restaurants, Cascais is one area not to be missed.
2. Tavira
Algarvetouristguide
The beautiful city of Tavira and its island beaches are rapidly becoming a must-visit destination – especially among golfers as many new courses are being developed to cope with rising demand. With its origins dating back to the Bronze Age, the city is awash with history while the beaches, accessed by ferry boat, can be found on the sand-bar island referred to as Ilha de Tavira. An area of beauty wherever you turn.
3. Faro

It’s difficult not to include the Algarve when talking about Portugal and Faro is the idyllic destination that immediately springs to mind. Alongside wonderful beaches, the southernmost city on the mainland sees temperatures in the mid-to-high 30s for the majority of the summer, making it an ideal getaway destination.
4. Lagos

OK. So there’s another piece of the Algarve that’s too good to miss! Lagos has had plenty of plaudits for its rich culture and exceptional beaches, both of which attract majority of visitors. Magnificent churches and fortresses with Moorish and Renaissance influences are found in abundance, alongside plenty of sun.
5. Aveiro

Dubbed the Venice of Portugal thanks to its scenic canals and bridges, the bustling city of Aveiro sits in the central part of the country. As with many other parts of the country there are plenty of historical sites to visit as well as a spectacular stretch of coastline. This mix makes it popular among both Portuguese and foreign tourists and it’s why you simply must visit this summer.
6. Peniche
Pinhalmar
Found on a rocky peninsula, the scenic harbour, white windmills and chapels of Peniche provide a certain degree of attraction. However, the big sandy beaches are exceptionally popular for sport and recreation, including surfing and windsurfing, as well as kite surfing. Some of the waves are considered to be among the best in Europe, only boosting the regions popularity.
7. Porto

Although not entirely a coastal city, Porto occupies the mouth of the Doura River in northern Portugal and is simply too wonderful to leave out. Full of cafes, restaurants and vendors on the banks of the river, the Ponte Dom Luis arch bridge dominates the scene of hilly part of the country. Portugal’s second city is bristling with culture and is also home of Port wine – as the name suggests. An escape to the wineries provides an alternative to the city or beach experience too.
